3XI vs Marjons 4

The first game of pre-season was eagerly awaited by a mixed team of 3/4’s players together with some assistance from players who will be playing at a higher level.

The game itself was split in to 4 quarters of 20 minutes (an excellent idea for a pre-season fixture).

Ocean City (OC) began the game spreading the ball amongst defence and midfield, and the first goal of the OC era was scored following a break down the left.

OC soon made it 2-0, albeit the opposition was settling into their game and had a few chances to reduce the arrears.

OC soaked up a fair amount of pressure but eventually Marjons reduced the arrears from a short corner.

Marjons continued to apply the pressure and whilst OC retained the lead the Marjons attack breached the OC defence once again.

A quick pep talk in the breaks helped OC arrange the press, and as the game progressed OC had better control and started to push Marjons back. All players moved the ball around the pitch and despite a few mistakes, the emphasis was on passing around the pitch and keeping the width.

Unfortunately Marjons took the lead (I consider against the run of play), and OC continued to play a decent game of hockey. As the game continued into the last quarter OC secured a penalty flick and with the assurance of the lethal striker that he is, Ben duly dispatched the ball towards the goalkeepers left foot and the chance went.

In the final 10 minutes of the game, OC continued to push for the equaliser and the pressure eventually paid off with a great finish from Cathan. The team carried on seeking the winner as Marjons tired, but the draw was a fair result.

Great effort from all players and on to DS next week
